Motorola Moto G Play (2021) Review

If you are looking for a mid-range smartphone that can perform all the important tasks while still being affordable, look no further. The Motorola Moto G Play is a budget smartphone that will do the trick. Although the G Play is low-end, you still get a good-looking phone that performs well.

The Motorola Moto G Play (2021) is the most affordable smartphone in the Moto G family. The device is a nice and light smartphone. It is easy to use, the screen is very good, the camera is pretty good, performance is fast and the battery life is longer than you would probably expect.

The Moto G Play is the most affordable of the four phones Motorola recently unveiled. The Moto G Play’s equipment list makes the price reasonable: a 6.5-inch LCD screen with 720p resolution and standard refresh rate, a Snapdragon 460 processor with 3 GB of RAM, and a generous 5,000 mAh battery.

The Moto G Play is great, but it doesn’t have the smooth back and perforated screen of its more expensive brothers. The device measures 6.6 inches by 3.0 inches by 0.4 inches (LxWxD) and weighs 7.2 ounces, with the weight being well distributed and comfortable in the hand.

On the front is a 6.5-inch LCD screen with a drop-shaped cutout for the camera. The screen resolution is 1600 by 720 pixels with a density of 269ppi. The screen is bright and clear and is perfect for displaying videos. Although upon closer inspection, the images and text seem soft. It’s not a bad thing, but if you prefer to read long articles or e-books on your phone, you should look for a brighter screen.

On the back of the phone, you’ll find a slightly textured panel with a matte powder finish. It’s warm and comfortable, but leaves fingerprints. It has a square camera module in the middle at the top, and underneath it is Motorola’s iconic fingerprint sensor.

At the top of the phone is the headphone jack, and below that is the USB-C charging port and speaker. The volume button and textured power button are located on the right side, while the SIM/MicroSD slot is on the left. Fortunately, the controls are quick, easy to find, easy to identify and easy to click.

Longevity is pretty good considering the price. The plastic back panel and frame can withstand drops without unnecessary damage. Motorola doesn’t say what type of glass was used for the screen, but it looks durable and can withstand minor damage. The phone was put in a backpack with sharp objects during several test days, and there were no scratches on the phone. Although it does not have an IP rating, it is waterproof and should be able to withstand rain or sweat without any problems.

The Moto G Play is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 460 chipset and 3GB of RAM. It has 32GB of storage capacity, with only 14.5GB available in the unlocked model. But if you buy the AT&T model, you might find it less appealing because it comes with more than two dozen pre-installed apps. Fortunately, you can add as much storage as you want, thanks to the microSD slot.

This budget phone doesn’t offer the same blazing fast performance as its more expensive counterparts, but the Snapdragon 460 SoC processor is fast. The G Play’s processor is an octa-core processor with four efficient Cortex-A-73 cores and four efficient Cortex-A-53 cores, and it has an Adreno 610 GPU similar to the more powerful Snapdragon 665 processor.

There is a slight delay when opening apps or switching between screens, but that’s all you can handle. If all you want to do with your phone is scroll through social media, watch videos and check your email, then the G Play’s performance is good.

As for the performance of the game, there are pros and cons. The phone was tested by playing PUBG Mobile or Alto’s Odyssey for a few hours. Loading times for both games were a bit slow, but there were no unexpected or sudden interruptions. If you’re into smartphone gaming, you want high-end hardware.

In Geekbench, a standard that quantifies raw processing power, the Moto G Play scored 255 in single-threaded mode and 1,269 in multi-threaded mode. For comparison, the cheaper Moto scored 228 in single-core and 791 in multi-core.

Motorola claims that the 5,000mAh battery offers about three days of use between charges, and we’re willing to take their word for it. With regular daily use during the test, we could use it for exactly three days before it needed to be recharged.

The G Play has a 13-megapixel rear camera (with a 2-megapixel depth sensor) and a 5-megapixel front camera for selfies. But the lack of an ultra-wide screen is disappointing, considering that it’s not hard to get a phone that offers that for this price.

The G Play has two main shooting modes in its own camera app – photo and video. It has a portrait mode and a few other extra features, but no night mode.

Outdoors, in good light, the 13-megapixel camera is good. All exposures are balanced and the camera doesn’t do excessive HDR, which is good, but you don’t have to get close to see the details. It doesn’t perform as well in low light, and the G Play is not suited to low light photography. The selfie camera also has intense anti-aliasing in the default Face Beauty Auto setting, but this can be turned off.

The battery life of the Moto G Play is impressive. During the battery test, I would get ten hours of screen time for three days before the battery died. And that’s certainly thanks to the energy-efficient nature of the Snapdragon 460, the 720p screen and the huge 5,000mAh battery that powers the phone – which is just great. So the battery life is more than sufficient for a long period of time.
