Fix AutoPlay not working for CDs and DVDs in Windows 10

  1. Open the Settings application. This can be done quickly with the key combination Windows + I.
  2. When the Settings application opens, go to Devices.
  3. Now select Autorun from the left menu. In the right pane, select the Removable Disk setting to ask me every time, or select another option.

After making these changes, check if the autoplay problem is completely solved.

Solution 3 – Check the auto-run settings in thecontrol panel.

If AutoPlay does not work for CDs and DVDs in Windows 10, your AutoPlay settings may be incorrect. To solve this problem, it is recommended that you check the automatic playback settings in the Control Panel. You can do this by following the steps below:

  1. Press Windows + S and type Control Panel in the search box. Now select Control Panel from the list of results.
  2. Go to Autorun in the Control Panel.
  3. Find the DVD section and select the default action for each DVD type. You can also do this for Blu-ray Discs and CDs. Then click the Save button to save your changes.

Run a system check for errors

Solution 4 – Check the Group Policy settings

If autoplay does not work for CDs and DVDs, the problem may lie in your Group Policy settings. In case you didn’t already know, you can use the local Group Policy editor to change various settings, and sometimes these settings can prevent AutoPlay from working properly.

However, you can enable AutoPlay in Group Policy by doing the following:

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog box. Now type gpedit.msc and press Enter or OK.
  2. In the left pane, go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Autorun Policies. In the right panel, double-click Disable AutoPlay.
  3. Select Not configured and press Apply and OK.

The AutoPlay function should then be activated and working again. If the Not value is already set for this policy, this solution will not work for you, so you can just ignore it.

Solution 5 – Check that the Shell hardware detection service is working properly.

According to users, autoplay problems may occur if the Shell Hardware Detection service is not running. If AutoPlay does not work with CDs and DVDs, the problem may be with the Shell hardware detection service. To activate this service, proceed as follows

  1. Press Windows + R and type services.msc. Now press Enter or OK.
  2. When the Services window opens, locate the Shell Hardware Detection service and double-click it.
  3. Set the start type to Automatic. If the service is not active, press the Start button to start it. Now click Apply and OK to save your changes.

This service should then be activated and the AutoPlay problem should finally be solved.

Solution 6 – Modification of register

If autoplay does not work for CDs and DVDs, the problem may be with your recording. According to users, you only need to change one value to solve the problem, and you can do that by following the following steps:

  1. Press Windows + R and type regedit. Press Enter or OK key.
  2. In the left pane, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer. In the right pane, find NoDriveTypeAutoRun and rename it to xNoDriveTypeAutoRun.

After that, check if the autostart problem still exists. If that doesn’t work, you can try this:

  1. In the left pane, navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer. In the right pane, remove the NoDriveTypeAutoRun value.
  2. Now find the value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer, right-click on the empty field in the right pane, and select New > DWORD Value (32-bit). Name the new DWORD NoDriveTypeAutoRun and set it to 0×000091.

Some users also suggest to just delete the data of the NoDriveTypeAutoRun value and save the changes.

Then close the registry editor and check if the problem persists. Since modifying the registry is not always without risk, we recommend that you make a backup of the registry just in case.

Solution 7 – Reinstall the CD/DVD driver

If you have problems with auto playback and CDs or DVDs, the problem may be with your drivers. To solve the problem, reinstall the CD/DVD drivers. You can do this by following the steps below:

  1. Open the Device Manager. You can do this quickly by pressing Windows + X and selecting Device Manager from the list.
  2. Now find your optical drive, right click on it and select Uninstall Device.
  3. When a confirmation dialog box appears, click Delete.

After removing the driver, restart your PC and the default driver should be installed automatically. After installing the standard driver, the problem should be solved permanently.
